Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) Services

Echocardiograms use ultrasound sensors to provide a graphic outline of a heart’s components. For an even more detailed and accurate look at a heart’s pumping function, physicians at Mount Sinai Heart New York at Jupiter Medical Center use transesophageal echocardiograms, or TEEs. The difference with TEEs is that the ultrasound emitter is inserted into your throat. Used in conjunction with a color Doppler ultrasound, these tools allow us to evaluate blood flow through your valves.

We use TEEs to diagnose several different types of heart disease, including diseases of the valves, myocardial disease, pericardial disease, masses in the heart, and congenital heart disease. The entire procedure will take roughly 90 minutes, but you’ll be anesthetized the entire time—both in your throat and intravenously.

What to Expect from Your Procedure

• You will change into a hospital gown prior to the procedure
• An IV will be inserted into your arm so you can receive medication at the right time
• You’ll be connected to an electrocardiogram, a blood pressure monitor, and an oximeter
• You’ll lie on your side for the procedure, and will be asleep for much of it
• You’ll gargle a throat anesthetic to keep you comfortable for the process
• A thin, lubricated endoscope will be inserted into your mouth and down your throat
• You may be asked to swallow the endoscope to make it travel easier—it will not interfere with your breathing
• Pictures of your heart will be taken at different angles, but you will not feel it by that point
